According to Rick Lowry, the editor of the National Review, Donald Trump lost, and almost everyone else did well. Carly Fiorina won, he says. Michael Medved, a nationally syndicated conservative talk radio host, thought that everyone did well for the most part and there were “no disastrous losers,” although he claims Trump and Paul did not fare the best. Jonah Goldberg, a conservative syndicated columnist and author, thought Jeb Bush could have done better, but found the debate entertaining and illuminating. Tim Carney, the senior political columnist for the Washington Examiner agreed with Lowry in that Fiorina won the debate, but also commented that Cruz was “nearly invisible.” Michael Sheehan, who is one of America’s leading debate coaches and communication strategists, thought Bush and Walker were the biggest losers because they were virtually unmemorable. Rick Wilson, a Republican message and media strategist, also weighed in saying “Rank and file GOP voters . . . were horrified by the third party blackmail from Trump,” while Larry Sabato, the director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics claims everyone did reasonably well except Trump, who he claims took a hit. Mark McKinnon, former media adviser to George W. Bush and John McCain, predicts that Trump will lose some of his momentum because of his performance, and that Fiorina was the winner. Mary Matalin, a Republical political strategist, fell in line saying “Trump has no depth.” The only opposing view came from the Democratic presidential strategist, Bob Shrum, who claims, ‘Trump not only survived but thrived.’
